RE: Racism in the 21st century
Posted by Vasmosn on 11.15.09 @ 07:19 AM
Again. A fact in and of itself cannot be racist. However, to use that fact and imply that it is because of race CAN be racist. So. If you say "statistically, black people commit more crimes," that's fine but to say "black people commit more crimes because they're black," that's racist. I hope you can understand the difference. As for the "race card" I notice that a lot of conservatives love to use the "liberal card" when they don't understand something and the "name-calling card" whenever someone disagrees. But it's me who is impeding a "thoughtful disagreement." Also there is a difference in saying someone is ACTING like a little boy and calling someone a little boy. I would be interested in seeing where Bush was called a "little boy. Still, it is offensive to black people in a way it isn't to whites. So yes, calling Obama is racist or insensitive at the least. And no, all words do not equally apply. For example, if you call a white person the "N-word" it may be stupid but not necessarily racist, but it's a lot more likely to be racist if you call a black person that. As for you being racist, not necessarily but I do believe you are ignorant of certain aspects of our society which could be good if you truly try to be objective or bad if you try to make things fit your preconceived notions. Also, Vasmosn is not a she.

A FACT itself cannot be racist. However when the fact is used to imply that something is true BECAUSE of race, that's racist. So if you assume that blacks have such an oversized amount of crime BECAUSE they are black, yes that's racist. Also, blackface is offensive almost inherently. It IS just makeup but if you're attempting to imitate the Jackson 5, blackface is highly inappropriate because none of them would have been considered dark skinned black people. So the only reason for blackface as opposed to "brownface" would be to "caricaturize" them. Which is racist. Oh yeah, if you're a commentator and you refer to the president as a "little boy" yeah, I'm going to think you're racist.
RE: Why we still need Black History Month

It's good that you don't "mind" blacks being brought up in history. I guess it's ok as long as it's not too often. We probably don't have a "short person's" month or a "fat person's" month because historically those people have not been discriminated against as blacks have. Their contributions have been included in history. You may not have known they were short or fat but they were included. If they were white. President Madison was 5'4" and President Taft was well over 300 pounds. Both were able to become president. On the other hand, most people don't know that the first person killed in the American Revolution was black. It's the fact that most people don't know things like this that separate us because far too often whites assume that blacks have done nothing for this country but eat up welfare checks. Of course I'm sure most black people don't mind all the mentions of whites in their history books.
RE: Back in the 1800s, were there any black slave owners?

Frank, I don't know where you're getting your information but Que is much more correct than you are. Slavery throughout history has rarely been based upon race. In most ancient cultures, slaves had definite rights. Most slaves were taken as prisoners of war or forced to work off debts. Durante Vita did not exist in most cultures. The children of slaves were not necessarily slaves. Slaves were considered human and in many cultures could sue their masters. In a few cultures the only differences between slave and free were where they could eat or sleep. The United States and Great Britain certainly were not among the first to abolish slavery, although they were far from the last. The reason that it is such an issue is because America supposedly founded itself on the basis of individual freedom and equality for ALL men! That shouldn't be hard to understand. Those things said, there still should be no guilt, no hate or division. Any more than if I see man spend 10 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit and I think he deserves help. I don't feel guilty and I don't hate those that put him there but I feel that to ignore him and treat him as if he's had just as much opportunity as anyone for success is crazy. No America is not evil but she has yet to live up to her potential and it's her potential that makes her truly great.
