Welcome, dear readers, to yet another goosebump-raising edition of Ask Boomer With Attitude, live from Charlotte, where the county manager can rack up a string of bad decisions and still get a big fat bonus. One of the questions this week is made up; maybe you can spot it. Dear BWA: I was very disappointed that Creative Loafing did not endorse Anthony Foxx for mayor, and I didn't like your calling Foxx and Lassiter Tweedle-black and Tweedle-white. -- Lifelong Democrat

In the "what were you thinking?" category, a United Airlines pilot was recently arrested for being drunk. Yes, you read right -- for being drunk before piloting United Airlines flight 949, which, by the way, was full and due to leave London's Heathrow Airport. According to a Nov. 11 article on MSNBC.com, the pilot, Erwin Vermont Washington, 51, is the third U.S. pilot in 13 months to be arrested for being over the strict alcohol limits imposed on airline staff.

Suppose the state legislature came up with the harebrained idea to pass a law to exempt the killers of white women from the death penalty, no matter how brutal and premeditated the crime. Kill a black woman, though, and you'd still be looking at possible capital punishment. There's no way legislators would do something that stupid, you say. The governor, a white woman herself, would never sign it. Well, it appears she did. It's called the Racial Justice Act, and

I find content for the column in an endless pile of police reports that media hounds look over throughout the day, hoping to uncover some juicy stories. Although the reports sometimes become tedious, the main room of the police department can be an

It's the week of Veterans Day, a good time to see if things have improved or not for our military vets. I didn't serve in the military, but veterans and their concerns have been a personal point of interest for a long time. A college friend was killed in Vietnam, and a high school classmate was mentally wrecked by his experiences in that hellhole. Today, another friend has a son who's serving in Afghanistan. You can't make up this kind of story. Some of you may have heard about Quinn Gray, the Jacksonville, Fla., housewife who faked her abduction in order to extort money from her husband. Gray, the mother of two young daughters, alleged that she had been kidnapped, sexually assaulted and held for $50,000 ransom in "hellish conditions." Upon investigation, authorities learned that it was just a sick plan, hatched by Gray and her 25-year-old lover to extort money from her husband.

The No. 89 jersey has been a top-seller for the Carolina Panthers for several years, worn and adored by Charlotteans and NFL fans around the country. But four years before Steve Smith joined the Panthers, that number was worn by another promising young wide receiver. After being drafted from the University of Colorado as the 27th pick in the first round in 1997 by the Panthers, Rae Carruth had a great first season. He led all rookie receivers in receptions

That hits some people funny. When I made the same argument last week, I was called a racist by some callers to my radio show. There's more to the Scarecrow and the Tin Man than meets the eye, and Harburg's message has renewed resonance today in the midst of

The supposed "war" between the Obama administration and FoxNews has been one of the stranger interludes in America's increasingly odd and volatile political scene. As soon as White House Communications Director Anita Dunn stated the obvious, noting that FoxNews "often operates as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party," the always-excitable network predictably dove off the deep end. It's "an abuse of power by the White House," and "clear censorship," they moaned, never mind that

Eastland Mall is a shell of its former self. Once a shopping destination for the entire state, with an indoor ice skating rink and large retail establishments like Belk, Sears and Dillard's, the mall is now filled with empty storefronts and "For Lease" signs -- leaving shoppers few options. But now, you can find God in the mall. Renovatus (which is Latin for "renovation"), a church that says it's for people under renovation, has made Eastland Mall its home. The

Is Charlotte really ready for a black mayor, and is Atlanta ready for a white one? While much of the nation is focused on the gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, there are some significant mayoral races happening in the country that have gone under the national news radar. One is taking place in our fair city. Sure, Virginia and New Jersey are important; both states went to Obama in last year's presidential election and now seem to be

As of deadline, it was still the biggest untold story in Charlotte. It is a story of shifting political power here of such magnitude that it jumps out at you when you look at the numbers. "Extraordinary rendition" is White House-speak for kidnapping. Just ask Maher Arar. He's a Canadian citizen who was "rendered" by the U.S. to Syria, where he was tortured for almost a year. Just this week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in New York City, dismissed Arar's case against the government officials (including FBI Director Robert Mueller, former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge and former Attorney General John Ashcroft) who allegedly conspired to have him kidnapped and tortured.
