'A VERY SPECIAL OLD WISE WOMAN': Check out the opening of the Persistent Nightmares exhibition at Green Rice Gallery on May 1.

You don't have to go to Elm Street for nightmares; instead try heading to 451 E. 36th St., where you'll find Green Rice Gallery. Its newest exhibition, which opens tonight, is titled Persistent Nightmares. It features black and white abstract drawings inspired by artist Andrea Worley's bad dreams. The pieces -- which are accompanied by information about the nightmares -- are supposed to conjure up "the raw edge between something vaguely recognizable and that profound abyss within us all." The exhibition continues through May 22. And if you go, remember to stay awake. Free. 7 p.m. Green Rice Gallery, 451 E. 36th St. 704-344-0300. www.green-rice.com.
