Okay, after reading everyone's comments about this stage play, it seems we have two extremes. People who loved it and some who didn't care for it very much. Personally, I would like to say that I am one of the ones who loved it and for the record I would also like to state that I am not black, I'm white.

I had the pleasure of attending the show on Saturday night. From what I understand all of the actors as well as the writers are Charlotteans so I wanted to support the production for that reason alone. I mean after-all I've supported dozens or productions out of New York.

Now I admit that the call outs suprised me at first, because it's not what I've grown accustomed to in theatre. But then I realized something, the audience was really into the play and they were inter-active and when it was over, the cast and writers received a standing ovation. So there were way more people there that enjoyed the play than those who didn't.

Was it my type of theatre typically, no... But did I have a good time, yes... Will I attend the second and third installments of the play, definitely... Some of us can't see outside of our closed minds and boring lives to understand that there is not just one way to do things. Maybe it's time for theatre to evolve like the rest of the world.

And maybe it's time that we check our racist comments at the door.

Well I have to say that first off I didn't think the play was ready to be in uptown and sponsored by Blumenthal. It's fantastic that these people went out on a limb. It's always great when people step outside their box and venture into new territory. That's how we grow.

With that said I also need to comment on the post that uptowner made about the audience and the call outs and such. I myself do not understand this behavior. I am not saying it's wrong or anything, I just don't understand it and to me it doesn't belong at the theater, whether it be the movies or a play. Whenever you are engaged in something with a vast amount of people I feel that there should be some level of respect for others around you so they can enjoy the show too. Besides that, isn't it a huge disrespect towards the actors on stage ?

I've noticed this everywhere I go. African American's in general behave this way. I am asking in all honesty, "why is this" ? All of us know that there is a vast canyon of differences between the black and white cultures. Maybe this is the greatest challenge we need to overcome as far as race relations go ? Don't get me wrong, I get the same "I don't belong here" feeling whenever I decide it might be a good idea to go to the Speed Street festival. So it's not so much black and white as it is huge cultural differences across many segments of the board.

Bottom line, I didn't feel all that comfortable at the show this past Saturday evening. Besides the quality of the play not being up to snuff I felt that the people I was surrounded by were not the people I would strike up a conversation with out on the street. Again, this is not a color issue. I don't have many African American friends but I do have a few. But they act differently then what I witnessed at the play. Maybe they just act differently around me ?

I am glad that some of the people seemed to enjoy the play. I hope those that do continue to enjoy the rest of the series.

Profanity is not needed ? Really ? There was some of it in your so called "great play". So what's the problem ? Did I use the word "crap", was that it ?

As far as the Color Purple goes, I mentioned it because posts were insinuating that this was a black/white issue. Mentioning that I loved the Color Purple was to prove that this was not the case at all. I did not say this to insinuate that this play was in the same league as Color Purple. Of course it was not, nor did I expect it to be.

My problem with the play was simple. It was bad. If you want to turn this into a race thing then that's your prerogative. If you got any prejudice vibes from my first post it was likely geared towards the audience more than anything. The call outs from the crowd to the actors, constant chatter from the crowd and people walking in 30 minutes late were stereotypical of what to be expected at a comedy club, not a theater.

Get over yourself already with your TRUTH.
